cheshire-cat (9.2.1) does not accept logins

The olc 9.2 test machine, cheshire-cat, no longer accepts Athena
logins (root works).
It took the 9.2.1 update last night. Attempts to log in are greeted
with the following in the console:
Starting sawfish window manager...
if: EMPTY if
ERROR:
Xession return non-zero status
Logging in without customizations yields the same error.
