The problem is that it was emacs which first tried to use the expired
tokens. Emacs got EPERM while trying to write the file, and nothing
appeared on my xconsole. Once I figured out that my tokens had
expired, I tried touching an AFS file from an xterm, but didn't get
any warning there either.
Yes, I was able to reproduce it. I even did a show_console, and there
was nothing there.
