I recently added a line to ~/.environment to detect whether or not it
was running on a Gnome workstation, and to echo the result to the
console. However, I then found that scp no longer worked,
complaining:

Write failed flushing stdout buffer.
write stdout: Broken pipe

I removed all of the "echo" lines from ~/.environment, and sure
enough, this error went away and scp worked again.

I think the ability to have .environment output text without breaking
scp is a desirable feature.

(And yes, this bug is also present in Athena 8.4.)
