OK, I think I've figured out what was going on with the background
being the wrong color sometimes. It was only happening on 8-bit
displays (if I correctly assume that gyruss, the test cluster Sparc 5
is an 8-bit machine). I also noticed that if an actual picture was
set in the background was set, it looked like it was having its
colormap seriously messed with.
I was thinking it might be Sawfish, and sure enough, when I take
Sawfish out of the startup sequence (or even just delay it until after
xss starts) the problem goes away. I don't know if that's a terribly
robust solution, though; maybe moving "background-properties-capplet
--init-session-settings" later in the sequence would be better, since
running this after startup always fixes the visual problem. I have a
feeling, though, that Sawfish could be fixed to not cause this problem
at all, no matter when it's started.
