Well, the splashscreen says "Starting foo" where foo is the first part
of the command.  So for example, I get "Starting gathrun" for a command
like "gathrun matlab" which doesn't seem likely to help much.  (There
doesn't seem to be a man page for xalf, BTW.)

Beland, what sort of machine are you running on, and do you have a list
of too-slow apps so we can think more about this, keeping in mind that
AUI is primarily aimed at users on cluster machines?
