Under 8.4 I was running real player with vanilla athena configs until I
opted into testing AUI.
At that point esd and AUI didn't get along, so I quit using esd.
But starting realplayer would hang after drawing some of the screen.
So I somehow got it going well enough to set the sound preferences
to use OSS but not esd.
Then KFOG stopped using protocol rev 7 and so I had to update myself to
realplayer 8.
Now with 9.0 when I started realplay either my own installed
realplayer8, or /mit/infoagents/arch/i386_linux22/realplayer7/realplay
it draws part of the screen and hangs. (There is no linux24 realplayer
in infoagents, something I'm sure is known and in Todd's queue.)
I got around this by killing esd, starting realplay and changing the
sound preferences to use esd.
All appears well.
Moral: Realplayer wants you to have esd or oss and is VERY finicky if
you have thw wrong one. Get out your pointy hat to recover.
