If I do anything with the "Panel" pane in the GNOME Control Center,
all of the icon buttons revert to "No Icon". Most recently, I
disabled the panel keybindings ("Miscellaneous" tab) and pressed OK,
and all of the button tiles vanished. If I explicitly set the tiles,
they stick around until the next time I do anything with the control
panel applet.
I'm seeing this on oliver, an SGI O2 toaster in the SIPB office:
