I think the problem is in your dotfiles. I looked at .profile and
.sh_setup and didn't see any evidence that you set ATHENA_SYS_COMPAT
anywhere.
As a test, I removed (on xcb) the /var/athena/infoagents/arch/sun4x_58
symlink you appear to have made as a workaround, and verified that I
get:
x15-cruise-basselope% athdir /var/athena/infoagents ""
/var/athena/infoagents/arch/sun4x_57/
netscape also seems to start fine for me on xcb.
