Matlab will run when launched from the initial terminal but fails
otherwise (popping up a terminal which immediately closes; it also
fails in this way from menus, but no the Run dialog). Terminals
launched from the panel launcher seem to get different environment
variables than the initial gnome-term, in particular
terminals-from-panel have:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/athena/lib/libxalflaunch.so
which isn't defined in the initial term; unset it and matlab launches
fine. xess seems to behave this way too, and Alex just mentioned he
saw something similar with webeq.
This seems to be a problem only on linux.
