sgi/linux xterm incompatibility?

When I ssh from an sgi to a linux machine, both running 8.4, there is
a terminal setting problem, such that line editing is basically
broken. (Using CTRL-P to recall commands does not properly rewrite
the line; CTRL-A does not move the cursor to the beginning of line).
man output also has a problem -- reverse-video and underline modes
are not getting turned off correctly.

The problem seems to be an incompatibility in the xterm terminfo
capabilities between the two systems. I built the IRIX xterm
terminfo file on Linux, and installed it under $HOME/.terminfo,
and the problems seemed to go away.
