Irix 8.4.5: Getting kicked off remote logins

So logging into whack-a-mole (8.4.5 IRIX) from no-whammies as beland,
via ssh, after wam has been up overnight, I will consitently get
kicked off the system in less than 5 minues. (My standard Athena
logout sequence runs; no one else is logged on.)
This doesn't happen when I'm root, and it doesn't happen for some
amount of time after I reboot.
Garry thought it might be reactivate...I did check /etc/passwd and
/etc shadow, and user beland is being added there as normal.
