I encountered xcb, an 8.4 Sun Ultra 10, in a hosed state this morning.
It had an xss screen saver widget on the screen, but not moving. It
did not respond to pings, or ssh and finger connection attempts. I
hit the soft power switch on the front of the computer, to no visible
effect.
Unplugging power from the back and plugging back in resulted in a
reboot with nothing apparently wrong.
