I updated vorpal-blade from Layered-8.3.31 to (non-layered) 8.4.1
tonight. This required making up a release-rpms list as I went and my
machine ended up not perfectly synced wiht the 8.4.1 RPM list after
teh update. However, trying to reproduce this is likley to be nearly
impossible, and given the klugery involved with updating my particular
machine, it's probably not worth worrying about.
I did end up wiht one serious probalem after updating. My machine
wouldn't boot. It found the kernel, but while booting it couldn't
seem to find my scsi controller (yes, this is a scsi only system). I
tried backing out the kernel update (booted off of a generic RedHat
install floppy) without any luck. However, with the backed out
kernel, I re-added the initrd line to lilo.conf and I was then able to
boot. Perhaps unsurprisingly, during the boot process the machien
appeared to load the SCSI driver right after unpacking the initrd
image.
I'm not sure what we want to do about this, but for now my machien is
happily running with the old kernel/initrd image.
