I noticed the following today while installing 8.4 on an Ultra
60. The install would proceed normally, and the machine would come up
fine the first time. If I then logged into the machine and rebooted it,
it would fail to come up, complaining that it couldn't access
/var/adm/utmp and /var/adm/utmpx, and prompt me for an init level; any
level I give it results in it attempting to go to single user mode,
failing, and asking the question again. Booting single user produces
the same results, and trying to boot -b, the machine would go into an
infinite loop of spewing "cannot access /var/adm/utmpx" error messages.
I was able to reproduce this with two seperate clean installs.
Booting single user off of the install server and poking around
on the disk didn't reveal anything stunningly interesting. I still have
the machine in this state if someone (Miki?) wants to take a look at it.
