This is coming from the 'aklog -path "$HOME"' in the Xsession script
(at a point when $HOME is /mit/<user>, not /afs/...).
It looks like aklog's -path option is broken in trying to descend the path
to the directory. I'll submit a patch.
I think the aklog in Xsession is unnecessary anyway, now that the session
is invoked directly, with tokens, from xlogin...
