What you type is protected by encryption.

...yet it logs me in successfully... further experimentation showed
that if the first 8 chars were right it did this and otherwise it
didn't let me in.  Thus I conclude it to be related to the shadow
password file.  This happens with both ssh and telnet on sun.  I
tested on SGI with telnet and did not observe this error.
