I believe this si the same bug I've reported that you tracked as far
as i/o to /dev/console blocking.  It doesn't surprise me that logging
in causes things to exit, since the console window starts working
again.  Also hitting ^p before trying to log in will work around the
problem, and may even cause some messages to the full-screen console.

This aspect of the problem doesn't seem that strange to me.

Just to let folks know, I consider this a showstopper for field
release.
