strange behavior on SGI while taking 8.2 release

This morning I found my SGI ("mr-jones") taking the 8.2.6 Athena release.
While eventually the release took and I can now use the SGI, during the
updating process I saw the same set of errors reported over and over. They
were of the form:
UX:touch: ERROR: Cannot change times on cosmo_worlds.ftr: Read-only file system
UX:touch: ERROR: Cannot change times on sgi.java.ftr: Read-only file system
UX:touch: ERROR: Cannot change times on soundplayer.ftr: Read-only file system
(these are only a selected few... there were many more, all reporting on
files ending in ".ftr")
This same set of errors was shown over 20 times. As I said, while the
update did work successfully, for a while I thought it was stuck in a loop.
Although looking at the log, I can see there were some messages inbetween
each set that were different each time.
I have saved the log of these messages if that would be helpful.
