Oops, a couple more things I failed to mention just now. 

1) ^C didn't kill the echo

2) I use the athenized syslogd which was hanging trying to display
something to the console window, and not processing new messages.

3) in case I hadn't mentioned it before, killing xlogin causes X to
restart which seems to at least clear out the current queue of things
that are waiting.
