emacs-zwgc is presumably relying on a bug where libzephyr would use
the value of DISPLAY as your tty field even if you weren't actually
using an X display.
zwgc now has a "-loc" option for setting the value of the tty field;
emacs-zwgc could be modified to use it, although of course then it
wouldn't necessarily work with 8.1.
