8.2 Ultra 10 xlogin drops to console login spontaneously

On my Ultra 10 running 8.2.0, xlogin sometimes dies with "unexpected
SIGCHLD" or something like that, leaving a console login up. I don't
know whether anyone else has seen this. It is a double-headed
machine, but I think it might have been doing this even before I set
it up to be two-headed.
The only things really out of the ordinary in my configuration are
mkserv remote plus the following X server config line:
X /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun -dev /dev/fbs/ffb0 -dev /dev/fbs/m640 left -fp /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/misc :0 -nobanner -ar1 250 -ar2 30
