O2 reinstall problems

I reinstalled the sipb O2 over the network this evening.
The install procedure worked without problem.
Unfortunately, we are now unable to set the root password.
yandros and I tried
/bin/passwd and /usr/bin/passwd (both are the same)
As well as the GUI system manager tools.
The password gets reset when you log out.
Also, sometimes when we give the athena root password
to the athena login screen, we are immediatly prompted
by the xdm login screen before being allowed to proceed.
/usr/athena/bin/passwd doesn't (and wasn't expected to)
allow resetting of the password either, but we tried it anyway.
