What were you trying to do?

Try out the spiffy new SGI O2 in sipb.

What went wrong?

After some time, the load (as reported by xload and uptime) started
climbing, although responsiveness didn't seem to be effected. It
climbed to ~3, and stayed there for a long time. Neither of `ps
-eaf' or `top' reported anything unusual in terms of processor time.

What should have happened?

The load reported should roughyl coorespond to some factor that I can
 find.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I don't use any of the standard SGI startup (I have a custom
.xsession). The following paths correspond to the binaries I used

   /usr/bsd/uptime
   /usr/bin/X11/xload
   /usr/sbin/top
   /sbin/ps

the `nbpd' process seemed to be the usuall `winner' in top (that's
part of the appletalk junk that should probably be removed)

I was running xterm, emacs (variously 19.34 and 20.2), and
netscape-beta (outland), as well as vtwm.gamma, xscreensaver, dash,
xload, betatcsh, (athena) telnet, and zwgc.

  Also, I like `elmer's name.
