ops: the background is that the current IRIX 6.3 OS tree has problems
because relative symlinks were broken when things were split into
subvolumes. (The reasons this wasn't noticed until now are a little
complex, and not really important)

Um, I personally would not like the number of volumes involved to
increase by that much. In fact I'd prefer that they not increase more
that the 6 volumes than we have now, but I understand that this might
not be possible. I'm not sure what the current volume size is, but we
might be able to gat away with making that bigger. (Note that these
are my opnions, and I haven't talked to other people in ops yet.)
