That's right :-(

Also, because the C libary hard codes /usr/lib/ld.so.1
in many binaries, perhaps our root partitions should come
with /usr/lib/ld.so.1 installed on them, so at least binaries
can be run if LD_LIBRARY_PATH is set by the poor user.
