the load was high (sitting around 1.6 when I was running top
and not much else) and the machine was slow

yeah, a couple of interesting things.
Kill -STOPing mediad dropped the load to around 1.
I also found the following interesting processes:
opus:~: ps -fu kretch
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME COMD
kretch 2265 2081 0 23:20:56 pts/1 0:00 su
kretch 2081 1 0 0:01 <defunct>
I'm disturbed that process 2081 was listed as defunct with init being
its parent, I thiought that was an impossible state. I killed 2265
and they both died, and the load dropped to 0.
I kill -CONTed meadiad and the load went back to around 0.6
