Sorry; I left out my other piece of information. I backed out backing
store on my 8.1 workstation and it still crashed. Yes, I restarted the
X server in between and made sure it was running without -bs. Besides,
Takehiko has been running 8.0 machines with backing store on for a few
months now and AutoDesk recommends turning it on. I would have been
really surprised if backing store was the culprit.
