Athena patch release 8.1.1 just went out for both platforms in the dev
cell. The changes in this release are:

	* (Solaris) /etc/athena/login/config has the hack to speed up
key repeat which had gotten stranded in the 8.0 source tree.

	* (Solaris) Symlinks are no longer made in /platform for the
architectures other than the one appropriate for the
	  machine.

	* (Solaris) The athena rc script now tracks against /os on
	  public workstations as before.

	* (Solaris) When finishing an update, named will be running,
which is important for proper operation of mkserv. (This
change was also applied to the SGI packs, but it does not
change the behavior of the script for SGIs.)

	* (Solaris) The /var/athena/rc.conf.sync file is no longer
	  world-writeable.

	* (Solaris) There are fixes to the install script to make an
8.1 installation work, and to put the /tmp directory on the
	  /var partition.

	* (Solaris) The 8.1.1 update will move the /tmp directory to
	  be under the /var partition.

	* (SGI) Due to an error in the track lists for the install
volume, the aliases file for clients was full of aliases for
non-local names. The 8.1.1 update corrects the aliases file
	  to have no aliases.

	* (Both) The picking of unique IDs for utmp entries by
/usr/bin/login is now deterministic and actually generates
	  unique entries.

	* (Both) During manual updates, when you are asked to press
return after the list of configuration files is given, it
will actually wait for you to press return.

	* (Both) On Solaris, MH was generating console messages about
"byte-range lock ignored"; they have been suppressed as they
were in 8.0. This change was also applied to the SGI packs,
but it should not have any visible effects (it may make
locking work slightly better in some unimportant cases).

	* (Both) A misspelling has been corrected in the discuss error
messages ("insufficent" has been corrected to
"insufficient"), and the discuss error messages now
consistently use "cannot" instead of "can't".

	* (Both) The olc_answers binary now finds the correct
	  executable in the olc-stock locker.

There are eight known new bugs in 8.1 which have not yet been fixed:

	* latex doesn't find its format file (the path configuration
	  is wrong).

	* On Solaris, named spews a bunch of warnings at startup time;
the named.mit file should probably be modified to suppress
	  such warnings.

	* The default value of KRBTKFILE set by login.krb5 does not
match the value used by the krb4 rkinitd. (It has not been
carefully determined whether this is a bug yet.)

	* On a privatized machine, the contents of the rc.conf file is
lost because it is modified once by the update and once by
	  mkserv.

	* /usr/athena/etc/disserve was not setuid on plug.mit.edu (a
Sun), but it seems to come up setuid on other machines when
	  you do a mkserv discuss.

	* The reactivate script tended to fill the Sun
bobbi-harlow.mit.edu's passwd file with root entries, but
	  only some of the time.

	* One machine, athanatos.mit.edu, reliably panics after the
first reboot when taking the update.

	* wellfleet.mit.edu, an SGI, has panicked three times
coincident with xscreensaver, twice after the password was
entered and once just after the screen was locked.
