xscreensaver will usually exhibit this behavior if it can't get an
encrypted passwd entry for you out of /etc/shadow.  Is it possible
that you did not have na entry in /etc/shadow for some reason?  Did
something in xlogin change such that it doesn't put you in /etc/shadow
in some case where it used to (like maybe if you are already in
/etc/passwd)?
