I think this problem has already been reported. I also thought it had
been fixed, though.
I updated megara (my sgi) to the alpha release 8.1 today.
it came up with (in the console)

email service wasn't working.
looked at /etc/services and the athena additions were missing.
cp'd /etc/services.old in place and the world improved.
