several applications, discuss and berkmail for two,
no longer recognize the backspace key as character
delete, rather they require the delete key. this
is, however, not true of either emacs or vi, or
the csh either, as they observe the backspace-means-
delete convention. in the broken apps (if, indeed,
it is the apps fault), the backspace key inserts
a into the input stream.
