I favor putting out a 7.7Y to fix the problem. Machines with this
problem should be able to take a 7.7 update (since they should have
cached cluster information), and we do have an emergency fallback in
case we run out of 7.7 letters (changing the version on the 7.7 packs
to 7.8 is a pretty evil kludge, but it would work).

Assuming this is acceptable, I'm going to rely on Craig to put out
7.7Y, since we don't have a whole lot of room for me to make mistakes.
There is tested code in /source/athena/config/update/vers/8.0D to
correct /etc/athena/rc.conf. (There are several ways someone could
have an 8.0 machine right now with a faulty rc.conf file, so we need
to correct it in 8.0D as well as 7.7Y.)

I am opposed to using gshell except in cases where machines won't take
updates at all. There may be some 7.7 machines in such a state
(Phyllis's machine apparently fell in this category), but I don't know
how they would have lost their cached cluster information.

Final note: I realize this is a bad day to be sick, but I may or may
not make it into work today, depending on how I feel.
