What were you trying to do?
Decide whether or not I should be losing
What went wrong?
I lost: specifically, none of the xterms I ran had entries in
utmp such that finger could see them.
What should have happened?
My xterms should have utmp entries.
Yo, got any documentation, or other info?
Yeah, this might be a little complex... xterm used to be in
/usr/athena/bin. It is no longer, so I get teh one from
/usr/openwin/bin, which is not setuid (and yes, my machine trusted the
relevant cell when I checked this). The lack of a setuid bit here
would certainly explain the lak of utmp entries.
However, before we just go and give this xterm a setuid bit, I seem to
recall a bug that prevented xterm loggin in AFS, and wos strongly
related to a security hole in xterm logging. Have these bugs been
fixed in the openwin xterm?
