   mickey-mouse 03 10:51am :-) kinit carla.root
   MIT Athena (mickey-mouse)
   Kerberos Initialization for "carla.root"
   Password:

   and got:

   carla.root: Decrypt integrity check failed

	. . .

I had just changed my root instance password (with kadmin). Is that
   what caused the error message?

That is exactly the cause of the error. The attempt to get Kerberos V5
tickets with the new password failed, as it is talking to one of the
slave servers for the V5 tickets, and the slave won't have it until
tomorrow. When the release is ready for production, hopefully, the list
of V5 servers will be the same as V4 servers, but until all the Kerberos
servers are upgraded, this cannot be put into effect.
