Hi Jake,
Are you getting the sipb xdvi before the athena one by any chance? I
just tried running both versions on a 7.7 RS/6000 and
/usr/athena/bin/xdvi reported two font substitutions, but otherwise
worked. However, /mit/sipb/rsaixbin/xdvi failed exactly as you
described.
