As an update to the report I sent earlier this week regarding
8-bit character filename problems associated with AFS and MAE,
here is a statement from Transarc.

In a future release of AFS, the restriction on "funny" characters in
filenames will be removed. The AFS defect number associated with this
issue is #5244. The fix will definitely be in the AFS 3.4 release,
but didn't make it into the AFS 3.3a release. For more info, have
your AFS administrator (site contact) get in touch with AFS Product
Support.
