Both of these problems are due to an error causing you to get a c
shell rather than a t shell by default. This should be fixed soon.

This is also the cause of the problem you were having, Reid. (A session
"without cusomizations" explicitly sets your shell to /bin/athena/tcsh,
so things work correctly.)
