logout doesn't work

I found porter, an RS/6000 running 7.6, with a user still logged in.
Clicking logout didn't work.  Logging in as root on the console and
killing all his processes didn't work.  CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to kill the
X server didn't work.  dm said

	unexpected SIGCHLD from PID

(note no PID printed) and hung until I typed ^C in that HFT, at which
time I got a new login screen.

Haven't RS/6000s always given an error on X server shutdown?  Maybe we
were just lucky in the past.
