The do_update script creates the /.deleted directory. Why exactly it
does this, I don't know. I've never been educated in the mechanics
of updates. But guess what I'll be studying this weekend...

Yup, sounds true to me. Sigh. Guess what else I'll be studying this
weekend...

You misunderstood the problem. The lack of kernel copy affects all
decstations. It only causes immediate booting problems for the 5000s,
though. 3100s still boot afterwards. It would be wise to copy in the
new kernel by hand after the update. This will be fixed with the
next vos release.
