In lines 687 and 688, can step before the end of the buffer and modify
random stack variables (saber pointed this out).

The problem was what Mark described, with a fencepost.  It's a 128
character line ending in '.' which tickles the problem.  I had
initially discounted that because the symptoms I was seeing weren't
right, but it turns out that I had many messages (actually many copies
of 1 message) with this pattern in it.
