Every machine should be using nic.ddn.mil as the name of the DDN NIC
whois server.
As I understand it, the ULTRIX developers at DEC modified whois
between ULTRIX 4.0 and ULTRIX 4.1 to use the name ns.nic.ddn.mil. This
was incorrect in that ns.nic.ddn.mil has never supported whois
service, i.e., it has always refused connections on TCP port 43.
Because of this, users of ULTRIX 4.1, 4.2, and 4.2A have always
obtained an error if they tried to use the whois program without the
-h option (unless a patched version of whois was installed in place of
the distribution copy).
I'm not sure if modifying whois for 7.4 will be possible, but I think
it would be a good idea.
