What should GNU emacs do with a screwed up DISPLAY var?

I agree with jfc that emacs should only be called as a fallback to ez if
DISPLAY is not set.  If you can connect to the remote X server, then ez
should be run, and if you can't, then emacs should be started up with
the -nw flag.
