Simple testing has shown that
emacs -display foo:0.0 -rv will work. (I don't have an x display,
so I cannot verify that the -rv was parsed.)
Is there any reason why you are using the -display option in the startup.X?
The DISPLAY environment variable is already set, and is not guaranteed
to be hostname:0.0, it might be 1.0
