Richard,
What exactly are the problems that you encountered with the logical volume
manager programs? I was able to list, create, delete, move, copy, and add
physical volumes without any problems on an updated workstation.
Additionally, I was able to create new file systems in the logical volumes I
created. What sort of problems did you encounter? Your message isn't very
informative on this point.
Sysck did fix up some other problems that were preventing the system from
working normally; mail can now be sent from the workstations, and the
protections on /tmp are correct. These issues will have to be looked at if
we no longer run sysck.
Additionally, administrators of private RS/6000's will expect to be able
to run this command and have it work properly; it is part of IBM's basic
system integrity checking tools. If, in the process of doing our
Athenaization of the workstations, we have broken how it works, it should be
fixed. If we have not modified the inventory information on the base
operating system, and it corrupts programs, this should be reported back to
IBM.
For now, Ezra and I will not be re-installing the workstations; currently,
they are more function than they were before the sysck was run. Since the
current test machines are all configured as public workstations, there
should not be much call for users to be using the logical volume management
commands; if they are broken, I believe it will have a less significant
impact than having mail fail to work. Also, we will need to investigate
whether these machines need to be completely re-installed to fix this
problem, or whether the affected files can be fixed as part of a normal
update.
