I see that we have added yet ANOTHER environment variable to the mess we have.
SLEEP_TIME is new in 7.2. I can see what it's used for, but it seems
to me that this could have been a shell variable, no? Also, it could be
unset when you're through with it. Or unsetenv it, or something, please.
We don't need another environment variable floating around...
