To: mar@ATHENA.MIT.EDU Cc: testers@ATHENA.MIT.EDU, djf@ATHENA.MIT.EDU Date: Fri, 21 Jul 89 17:42:02 EDT From: John Carr <jfc@ATHENA.MIT.EDU> This is an old (6.0) bug, which I can explain in detail to anyone who is interested. The short story: There is a race condition in NFS umounts, which can cause buffers awaiting transmission to the server to be invalidated before they are sent. It is hard to reproduce (my .logout used to do it at least 30% of the time, but it seems network load-dependent and doesn't happen anymore), and therefore hard to fix well. It is observed on both RT and vax, more often on the RT --John Carr
