weird installation behavior

I just installed the new xdm on portnoy, an RT in the sipb office.
This is what I did:
1) The machine was deactivated and at the toehold prompt.
2) logged in as root with ^P.
3) /etc/athena/activate
4) attach xdm
5) /mit/xdm/install-test
6) Logout.
I got the toehold prompt back, which I thought wasn't supposed to
happen. So I logged in as root again just to poke around, and in the
middle of "more /etc/ttys" everything froze, an X server started up,
and the new login appeared.
Odd.
