   Two comments:

   1) I have this process running throughout my session:
USER PID %CPU %MEM SZ RSS TT STAT TIME COMMAND
   root 26184 31.5 9.6 788 260 co R 1:05 - -v :0 -fp /afs/athena/astaff

That's the X server.

This machine (vs2000) is kind of slow. While the login is cute, it
doesn't seem to be worth the decrease in the power of the workstation.

You're confused. The new login stuff takes up considerably less space
and CPU resources than the old. The new stuff is faster than the old
stuff, not slower.

The quick login is handy, but you might as well just have a short
thing that kills X and logs you in terminal mode. Then it could be
fast during the session as well.

Typing ^P or selecting the "Shutdown Window System" on the "Other
Options" menu will do this.
