I ran into this problem on burn.mit.edu as well; however, I also noticed
that the 'm' (as in mrroot) functioned as return as well.  This gave me
the clue to figure it out; if you toggle the control key once or twice,
the keyboard starts responding again.  Apparently all of the keys were
being interpreted as if the control key was down.
