The install instructions don't mention that the machine must be activated:
To install the new Xlogin:
1) logout of your workstation
2) ^P login on the console as root
>>> 2a) /etc/athena/activate ; rehash
3) attach xdm
4) run /mit/xdm/install-test
5) if the script runs without error, logout immediately.
head is not found otherwise.
